On November 6-7, 2009 Old Fort Niagara will host a two-day program focusing on the French people who built the Fort in the early 18th century. Friday’s program is designed for over 500 middle and high school French language students from throughout western New York. Students will experience early French cooking, architecture, music, military life, travel, trade, and religion at over twenty interpretive stations throughout the Fort.
Saturday’s program is open to the general public and will feature French cooking demonstrations, blacksmithing, military drills, musket firing, trade bale races, and a variety of hands-on activities for families. At 2:00 pm the Fort will dedicate a new outdoor interpretive label designed and produced by The Seaway Trail that explains the Siege of 1759.
The program is held in conjunction with National French Week and is cosponsored by the Western New York Chapter of the American Association of Teachers of French.
Old Fort Niagara is located in Youngstown, NY 14 miles north of Niagara Falls via the Robert Moses Parkway North.
The fort opens at 9:00 am daily year ’round, and is open until 5:00 pm during the winter months. Admissions end at 4:30 pm. The Fort is closed Thanksgiving Day, December 25th and January 1st. Old Fort Niagara is a National Landmark and State Historic Site operated by the Old Fort Niagara Association (a not-for-profit organization) in cooperation with the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation, and Historic Preservation.
