This is for those of you who live far, far away….

For dinner last night I had a “Double, Double” from Viola’s Subs – short for double steak, double cheese sub for those of you who have forgotten.

No matter where you are, whether another sub shop in Niagara Falls or anywhere else in the universe, you will NEVER find a Steak & Cheese even remotely like Viola’s.

While I was devouring my sub I wondered what really did make it so special. Is it the tomatoes and onions chopped into neat little squares? Is it the sprinkle of oregano that lends to the uniqueness of flavor? Or is it a particular brand of oil…maybe the brand of steak or cheese is what places this sub firmly on the list of Niagara Falls’ food lore.

Whatever. It was so very yummy and I wish you were here to enjoy it with me. Afterwards, we would have wadded up napkins to wipe the oil off our fingers; perform an “oregano check” on each others smile and sat back while we finish off our Pepsies – totally in hog heaven.

You know, if you came home for the Niagara Homecoming Weekend, I’ll bet you could stop and get yourself a Double, Double. C’mon, you know you wanna!

  1. I miss getting a Page’s hot dog and curly cue fries…
I bet there are many of us that miss food when we are away from home or from places that have closed:(

  2. A couple times a year I treat myself to a Viola’s sub (I work a few yards away from the one on Military Rd!). Yesterday was one of those occasions. Before I took my first bite, I raised it in the air as a salute to those far away who might wish they were about to bite into that succulent sandwich!! Focusing on the positives of this area (including food!) keeps me here…I LOVE this town, warts and all!!!
